CDWM SWPP Plant Filter Backwash Controls Replacement Project, Chicago, IL PhotoThe South Water Purification Plant Filter Backwash Controls Replacement Project upgrades the filter and backwash controls for the six galleries consisting of 120-filters at CDWM’s Sawyer Water Purification Plant (SWPP). The SWPP has 120 granular media filters arranged in six filter galleries each containing 20 filters. Galleries 1 through 4, consisting of Filters 1 through 80, were originally constructed in 1947. Galleries 5 and 6, consisting of Filters 81 through 120, were constructed in 1966.

This project replaced 6 master backwash control panels, 120 filter control consoles, flow transmitters, loss of head transmitters, ultrasonic level transmitters, 612 valve actuators and controls, new control kiosk and all associated piping and wiring. The project also included integration, programming, testing, and commissioning new PLCs, OITs, desktop SCADA workstation, industrial workstations and SCADA servers to operate with CDWM’s existing SCADA system. A new redundant fiber optic network was provided to communicate to the PLC SCADA network and separate dedicated Data network.

Scope of work was for the electrical, Instrumentation and Control (I&C), and SCADA Phase III – Construction Professional Engineering Services. This work included review the Electrical, I&C, and SCADA shop drawing submittals; review and respond to Construction Request for Information’s (RFI’s), startup and testing oversite, review of construction Request for Quote’s (RFQ’s) and Change Orders including preparing independent construction cost estimates, and design change documents.
